AIM-AHEAD AI/ML Capability Survey

WHO ARE WE

The Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD) program, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, is working to establish mutually beneficial partnerships with institutions like yours to increase the participation and representation of researchers and communities currently underrepresented in the development and application of AI/ML models to address health disparities, and to enhance the capabilities of this emerging technology within these institutions.

WHAT IS AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the process by which computer systems mimic how humans process information to learn, problem-solve, and make decisions; machine learning (ML), is an application of AI that uses data to help a computer learn without direct instruction from humans. This enables a computer to continue learning and improving on its own, based on experience.

HOW IS AI BEING USED IN HEALTHCARE

In healthcare, AI has the ability to process massive amounts of data associated with an individual or groups of individuals from a variety of sources. This process helps identify formerly complex and often unrecognizable patterns to predict health risks and outcomes significantly faster than conventional approaches. AI is already used in health care practice, for instance, to more accurately detect early-stage disease. AI holds promising potential to help mitigate and address health disparities if it is built and applied through broad and equitable inclusion of communities that have been historically underserved and underrepresented.

WHY YOUR VOICE MATTERS

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and many other organizations share a mission to help address health inequities and improve health outcomes in underserved and underrepresented communities. Organizations like yours often advocate for and introduce advanced and innovative resources like AI and other capabilities to support this mission; unfortunately, the ability of many of these organizations to develop and apply this capability is often hampered by a disproportionate lack of access, capacity, and necessary resources. To effectively move towards more equitable access and use of AI in underserved and underrepresented communities it is critical to appropriately engage organizations like yours for thoughts and input on how to best do so. This survey is intended to capture your voice.

WHAT NEXT

We would like your participation in a survey designed to gauge your interest in applying AI to help the communities you serve and to understand your current and desired capacity to do so:

  1. Better understand your interest and desire to participate in AIM-AHEAD.
  2. Gauge your current and desired future capacity to develop and apply AI/ML to address health disparities.
  3. Learn about your interest in working with us to help build AI/ML capacity in organizations like yours, all in an effort to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes in the communities you serve.

The information gathered in this survey will be used to build an inclusive approach to identify institutions interested in benefiting from initiatives aimed at improving their data science and AI/ML capabilities, and how to best do so.
