Unlock New Learning Opportunities: Explore the Enhanced Course Catalog on AIM-AHEAD Connect

The AIM-AHEAD Communications Hub continues its ongoing efforts to expand AIM-AHEAD Connect’s Course Catalog, working closely with the AIM-AHEAD Data Science Training Core (DSTC), the AIM-AHEAD Data Infrastructure Capacity Building (DICB) Program awardee-led MATCH initiative, the AIM-AHEAD Coordinating Center (A-CC), and NIH. 

Since the start of AIM-AHEAD’s fourth year of funding on August 1, 2025, three new AIM-AHEAD Connect courses have been released, providing members with asynchronous opportunities to advance their skills in AI and biomedical research.

These courses are included with AIM-AHEAD Connect membership and can be completed at each learner’s own pace through the platform. Below is an overview of the three newest courses made available to members: 

DSTC: Staying Current with Cutting-Edge AI Training Modules

Course Directors: Toufeeq Syed, PhD, and Gordon Gao, PhD

Developed by the AIM-AHEAD Data Science Training Core, this course helps participants keep pace with rapid developments in artificial intelligence, with a focus on healthcare applications. The course provides a detailed overview of AI’s evolution, key breakthroughs such as generative AI and multimodal models, and strategies for leveraging AI in research and clinical decision-making. Participants also learn about AI robustness, data curation, and human-AI collaboration, gaining practical insights into integrating AI into healthcare workflows.

The six modules guide learners from foundational concepts to applied skills, exploring AI model development, data harmonization, and real-world case studies that demonstrate the impact of AI on healthcare delivery. By completing this series, participants gain both theoretical understanding and practical tools to navigate the dynamic AI landscape and contribute meaningfully to health research and innovation.

AIM-AHEAD and MATCH AI Hands-on Workshop Series

Course Directors: Amina Qutub, PhD, and Toufeeq Syed, PhD

Part of the AIM-AHEAD Data and Infrastructure Capacity Building (DICB) Program, the AIM-AHEAD and MATCH AI Hands-on Workshop Series introduces participants to practical applications of AI in biomedical research. Current modules cover generative AI for biomedical decision-making and geospatial analysis, with a third module on predictive modeling for acute myeloid leukemia clinical and proteomic data launching soon. Learners gain hands-on experience with healthcare data types, including electronic health records, images, and text, while exploring AI methodologies such as computer vision, generative AI, adaptive learning, and federated learning.

The course combines conceptual overviews with exercises that allow participants to apply AI methods in realistic research scenarios. It also highlights common considerations and potential pitfalls in biomedical AI, helping learners build confidence in evaluating, adapting, and deploying AI techniques in their own projects.

Introduction to Natural Language Processing

Course Directors: Ted Edwards, PhD, and Toufeeq Syed, PhD

Introduction to Natural Language Processing provides a comprehensive foundation in NLP for learners with basic Python experience. The course covers the history and fundamentals of NLP, text classification, syntactic and semantic analysis, and machine learning techniques. Learners are also introduced to the Transformer architecture and large language models, along with practical tools and APIs, with a focus on applications in medical research and practice.

Structured in a modular, self-paced format, the course allows learners to progress from basic concepts to advanced, hands-on applications in Python. Participants develop practical skills in deploying and scaling NLP models, analyzing healthcare text data, and exploring emerging directions in generative AI, equipping them with the knowledge to apply NLP methods in real-world biomedical research settings.

The AIM-AHEAD Communications Hub, in collaboration with the AIM-AHEAD DSTC, the MATCH team, the A-CC, and NIH, continues to enhance the AIM-AHEAD Connect Course Catalog.
