AIM-AHEAD & AIHEC SimChart Training Program

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), in partnership with AIM-AHEAD, is building sustainable artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) capacity across Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs).

The SimChart Electronic Health Record Faculty Training Program was designed to train TCU nursing faculty to integrate an academic electronic health record into their courses. The program provided hands-on experience using simulated clinical documentation and patient information, allowing nursing faculty to strengthen their own digital competencies while preparing students for increasingly technology-driven clinical settings.

Program Goals

Use experiential learning approaches to promote workforce development and interdisciplinary teamwork.

Differentiate and correctly document patient information and identify and correct errors in an electronic health record. Use laboratory values and other patient information to make clinical decisions.

Strengthen data interpretation and clinical decision-making skills. Bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Reinforce faculty members' ability to use electronic health records within nursing education.

Program Awardees

The SimChart Program is designed to meet the needs of Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU) nursing departments faculty to implement and teach clinical documentation with the assistance of AI to promote data computation, secondary data analysis, health informatics as in leveraging technology to improve patients’ outcomes in clinical settings. Health and nursing informatics involve the integration of health care sciences, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in nursing and healthcare. When combined with AI technologies, can significantly improve how care is delivered, particularly for chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.

Cohort 1 Outcomes

Evaluation results demonstrated a strong impact on both participant skills and confidence. Participants also described the experience as valuable for strengthening connections among TCU nursing faculty and expanding their understanding of AI, machine learning, and electronic health records.
